StepBet alternatives
If you want money on the line without StepBet’s pot, games and membership, three routes are worth knowing, plus a wave of newer entrants. Strutty charges you only for the days you skip, Forfeit puts money behind any habit, and your phone’s own tracker costs nothing at all.
1. Strutty: pay only for the days you skip
We built Strutty because we wanted the pressure without the game. No pot, no cut for the house, no membership, and no waiting weeks to see where you stand. You set a step goal and a daily stake. Apple Health counts the steps. Hit the goal and you pay nothing, today and on every day you walk.
A missed day is not charged at midnight. With notifications on you get a heads-up in the evening, a final warning at night, and until 10:00 the next morning for late steps to sync. If something real got in the way, you can appeal in one sentence, and an approved appeal is refunded.
It is iPhone only, it counts steps and nothing else, and it will never pay you money. That is the whole product.
2. Forfeit: put money behind any habit
Forfeit works the same way for any promise: read at night, go to the gym, stay off the drink. Steps come from Apple Health; most other habits need proof, a photo or a GPS trail or a timelapse. It charges a subscription on top of your stakes, it is strict by design, and it now bundles an AI accountability coach.
Choose it if walking is only one of several habits you want to hold yourself to, and the subscription does not bother you.
3. Your phone’s step tracker: no money, no pressure
Apple Health already counts your steps on the iPhone, for free, and most other phones ship with something similar. You get the number, the charts and the streak, and none of it costs anything.
Choose it if the number alone gets you out the door. Plenty of people are fine here, and it would be a poor trade to stake money on a habit you already keep.
The newer entrants
The category is filling up. Steppa and Cadoo run StepBet-style challenges: pay an entry fee, hit your step goals, and the finishers split the pool. Mongo sits closer to Strutty, with a daily step target read from Apple Health, but a missed day sends your stake to charity rather than simply ending the matter. All three are young. Before you put money into any of them, check that a challenge is actually running and read what a missed day costs.
Side by side
| Strutty | Forfeit | Phone tracker | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What you can lose | Your daily stake, on a day you skip. | The amount you stake. | Nothing. |
| Subscription | None. | Yes, on top of your stakes. | None. |
| How a day is checked | Apple Health, on its own. | Apple Health for steps; proof for other habits. | Counted, but nothing rides on it. |
| Covers | Walking. | Any habit you can prove. | Steps and general activity. |
| Can you win money | No. | No. | No. |
How to choose
Ask one question: has the free tracker already worked? If you have had it for a year and the walks still did not happen, the number was never the problem. Money changes the arithmetic of a wet Tuesday.
If you want a contest and a shot at winning, that is StepBet, Steppa or Cadoo. If you want the habit and not the game, start with the one that only charges you when you don’t walk.
Questions worth asking first
Is there a free StepBet alternative?
Your phone’s built-in tracker is free and always will be. Strutty has no subscription and no membership either: the only charge is your own stake after a day you skipped.
Can I make money walking with Strutty?
No. There is no pot and no prize. The best case is that you keep all of your money and get the walk.
Do these apps work with Apple Health?
Strutty reads your daily step total from Apple Health on the iPhone. Other apps connect to trackers in their own way, so check how yours does it before you put money behind it.
What if my phone did not sync my steps?
In Strutty an unverified day is never charged. The first is waived with a warning, and if it happens again your goal pauses until Apple Health syncs and you choose to start again.
Put your money where your feet are.
No subscription. You pay only for a day you skip.
